Role Overview
The 3D Printing Operator and Teacher is responsible for operating, maintaining, and teaching the use of an industrial/commercial 3D printer while developing curriculum and training students and educators. This role also carries significant responsibility for grant-funded equipment compliance, recordkeeping, audits, reporting, and participation in regional manufacturing networks.

This position begins as a volunteer role and will transition to a paid role as sufficient revenue is generated. The target pay for this role is $55 per hour, and the position is expected to eventually become full-time as the Institute grows.

Startup Environment Expectations
The ckingknowledge Institute operates in a startup environment, which means:

No reminders are provided to complete work. Individuals must be self-motivated, execute work without supervision, and communicate immediately if expectations or timelines change.

Functions and processes are not yet documented. Each team member is expected to:

Document the procedures and steps they use to perform their role

Ensure work can be repeated consistently at a high level of quality

Continuously improve and evolve documentation

Create materials that can be used to train future team members or successors
-
Integrity, accountability, and proactive communication are essential.

Compensation

Initial status: Volunteer

Transition to paid: Once sufficient revenue is received

Target pay: $55 per hour

Long-term outlook: Role is expected to become full-time as revenue grows

Onboarding & Training
The onboarding process includes completion of a 10-week 3D printing training program focused on operating an industrial/commercial 3D printer. Candidates must complete one of the following options:
-
Online, self-paced training, completed within 10 weeks
OR -
In-person training at the Technical Center of Automation Alley, one full day per week for 10 weeks inside of Geofabrica Inc. at 2900 Auburn Ct, Auburn Hills, MI 48326
After training program is completed, candidates will also have to travel to Technical Center of Automation Alley [Geofabrica Inc] to 3D print prototypes and to receive technical assistance.

Core Responsibilities
Instruction & Teaching

Teach students and educators how to safely and effectively use an industrial/commercial 3D printer
-
Translate technical knowledge into clear, age-appropriate, and accessible instruction
-
Support both student learning and teacher professional development

Curriculum Development
-
Develop original curriculum related to 3D printing, additive manufacturing, and digital fabrication
-
Continuously refine curriculum based on student outcomes and program needs
-
Align instructional materials with real-world manufacturing practices
​
Operations & Equipment Management
-
Operate and maintain the industrial/commercial 3D printer
-
Monitor printer performance and ensure proper usage
-
Document and report maintenance, repairs, and incidents
​
Compliance, Record Retention, Audits, and Reporting
1. Record Retention
Operator agrees to maintain complete and accurate records related to the usage and maintenance of the 3D printer and participation in training and the Project DIAMOnD (PD) network. Records must be retained for a minimum of five (5) years.
Records include, but are not limited to:
-
Logs of 3D printer usage, including number and types of prints completed
-
Maintenance records and service reports
-
Documentation of training sessions attended and certifications received
-
Records of incidents, damages, or repairs
-
Required reports or deliverables

2. Access to Records
Automation Alley, Oakland County, the federal government, and/or their authorized representatives shall have the right to access, examine, and audit all records related to the 3D printer and program participation during regular business hours with reasonable notice.
​
3. Audit Compliance
Operator must fully cooperate with audits, reviews, or investigations, including:

Providing access to records
-
Responding to inquiries
-
Facilitating on-site visits if required
​
4. Reporting Requirements
Operator agrees to submit periodic reports to Automation Alley documenting:

3D printer usage
-
Maintenance activities
-
Any incidents or damages
-
Certification, under penalty of perjury, that the 3D printer remained operational within Oakland County, Michigan during the reporting period
​
Legal & Ethical Use of Equipment
Recipient shall not use the 3D printer for:
-
Any unlawful purposes
-
Producing items that violate intellectual property rights
-
Any activity that violates legal or regulatory restrictions
​
Project DIAMOnD (PD) Network Participation
Recipient agrees to actively participate in the Project DIAMOnD (PD) network, including:
-
Maintaining an active PD account
-
Using the network for manufacturing activities
-
Attending required PD meetings or webinars
-
Providing feedback on the 3D printer’s performance and its impact on Institute operations

Ability to work independently without supervision or reminders

Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
